This Newsletter gives a broad overview
the role of People's Health Movement
across the world but is still a
representative selection. A mere News
Brief cannot do justice to all that is being
done by PHM constituents globally.
There are too many things happening,
too much to report. All that we can do is
to whet you appetite. Here is a
worthwhile initiative that is bringing
people together to fight forces of
oppression, forces that deny the basic
human right of health.
The role of civil society in shaping
policies in general and health policies in
particular is being increasingly realised
and given prominence by the powers that be. PHM's significant role in the Commission on Social
Determinants of Health of the World Health Organisation is merely the beginning of such a
process. PHM fully utilized this opportunity and across all the regions, hundreds of civil society
organisations and individuals participated and contributed to the process which finally led to the
CS response to the interim report. Amit Sen Gupta of PHM India and his colleagues from other
regions made an excellent job of it. We give here a brief view of a lengthy report. The final draft
report of the Commission is now available and PHM has sent in some comments for its
consideration.
